Good news for Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society! The 61-year-old has been set free on bail after spending more than a week in a Frankfurt jail.

According to CNN, Watson posted the $318,000 bail after a judge ruled he could go free pending an extradition decision to Costa Rica.

“The court ruled last Friday that Germany will consider the request and that Costa Rica will have 90 days to make its case,” the site reports. “The German Ministry of Justice then will decide whether to extradite Watson.”

Speaking to reporters after being freed, Watson remarked on the oddity of finding himself in this situation.

“It’s very strange that this so-called extradition thing was dismissed by Interpol in every country except Germany,” he said. “I haven’t gotten an explanation on that – but maybe the courts will enlighten us.”

The Costa Rican government issued the arrest warrant against Watson alleging “violation of ships traffic” in Guatemalan waters during a 2002 campaign against illegal shark finning. He has denied any wrongdoing.

“I had to take action with my crew a decade ago to protect hundreds of sharks, and of course, those shark poachers have very powerful allies in government and other places,” he said.
