The digital age is undoubtedly changing our relationship with books. With e-readers and e-books gaining traction, no longer are real books only to be read, but recycled into various forms ranging from the artistic to the practical, much like these book paper pendant lamps by architect-turned-lighting designer Allison Patrick of Zipper 8.

A recent architecture graduate in New York City who is now focusing on lighting, Patrick came up with the design after experimenting with various eco-friendly design ideas and recycled materials. She describes her lamps as both “ruffled and feminine,” yet also “hip and modern,” giving a soft light.

Made from the pages of old books, sheet music or maps which are cut into circles and arranged on the shell of a typical paper lantern, Patrick intended for these lamps — both in a pendant and table version — to look like artichokes. Typically, pages from six or seven different books will be used, and the patterns of the shapes as well as the juxtaposed patterns of the inscriptions on each circle creates layers of visual interest.

There’s also a comic book version too — a real blast of colour on the eyes.

For the cocktail lover, there’s a funky lamp made out of those paper parasols you usually find in your drink.
