From stunning gowns to intricately carved works, leaves in their natural state can be an extraordinary material. Japanese artist and designer Azuma Makoto (seen previously for this 3D spun moss carpet) creates understated but incredibly textured works with leaves, mosses, flowers and other varied plants. One of his recent exhibitions, Collapsible Leaves, features suspended and wall-mounted sculptures made up of layers upon layers of green leaves that seem so inviting to touch.

Seen over at This Is Colossal, Azuma, who owns and operates a designer flower shop in Tokyo, has created various nature-inspired installations all over the world. For Collapsible Leaves, Azuma uses layers upon layers of folded leaves, all arranged in simple shapes or forms. It’s a simple technique that still achieves an incredibly textured effect, whether it’s one of repetition or of contrast.
