ISTANBUL – Hürriyet Daily News

The ‘Destination: Design’ series at the New York Museum of Modern, or MoMA, continues this year with Istanbul. As part of the project titled “Destination: Istanbul,” products by Turkish designers chosen by MoMA will be on sale at the museum’s design store for two months. The whole collection will also be available in Istanbul until the end of November

One of the world’s leading contemporary art spaces, the New York Museum of Modern Art, or MoMA, and the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, or IKSV, are collaborating on a special project.

Istanbul will be this year’s guest of “Destination: Design” series, which is an initiative organized by MoMA, which has as its particular aim to publicize the current notable trends in design in countries around the world. Among the former guest locations of the event are Finland, Denmark, Buenos Aires, Berlin, Japan, Seoul, Brazil and Portugal.

Revenue generated by the Destination: Design series support programs and exhibitions at MoMA.

As part of the project titled “Destination: Istanbul,” products by Turkish designers chosen by MoMA will be on sale in the design store of the museum for two months. The whole collection of “Destination: Istanbul” will also be on sale at the IKSV Design Store until the end of November after a special opening at the end of May.

In the special collection of more than 100 products from 41 Turkish designers, items such as home accessories, furniture, kitchenware, jewelry and much more will meet design buffs from May 12 to June 30. In MoMA’s selection, which features pieces unique to Turkey, there are lots of various products including service plates made from olive trees from the Aegean coast, porcelain espresso cups reflecting silhouettes of Mevlevis, traditional tea pots made of nylon and steel, pearl jewelry inspired by the abacus and Plexiglas chess sets with Istanbul’s impressive silhouette.

The 41 designers include 2mikrop, Ali Bakova, Alev Ebuzziya Siesbye, Arda Tunçman, Aida Pekin, Aysun Altındağ, Meltem Maralcan, Bahadır Baruter, Berra Alkan, Burcu Akbulut Onur, Demir Obuz, Elif Özsezen, Ela Cindoruk, Emir Uras, Erdem Akan, Fabio Ricci, İstanbul Dresses, İz, Kamer Foundation, Koray Özgen, Leyla Taranto, Kunter Şekercioğlu, Maybe Design, Mehtap Obuz, Munire Kırmacı, Nil Deniz, Ömer Ünal, Alper Böler, Ottoman Jewelry, Oya Akman, Özlem Ölçer, Özlem Tuna, Sabrina Fresko, Sadi Tekin, Selin Okçu Büyüksoy, Sema Obuz, Sezgin Sander, Soner Özenç, Sultan Ragbet, Tan Mavitan and Urart.

Designer Tuna, who draws attention for her plain designs combining the Ottoman world with present time, will take part in this very special event with her design named “Lalegun.”

The sugar bowl from the artist’s “Zevk-Bahş” collection is made with an oxide-coated copper lid and turquoise ceramic bowl. Zevk-bahş is Persian for a thing that gives pleasure and was also the name of a popular type of tulip in the Ottoman era.

The reason MoMA chose the Lalegun for the collection is that the tulip, which made its mark on the 16th-century Ottoman world, is one of the traditional symbols of Istanbul.

Products selected for “Destination: Istanbul” can be found through momastore.org and in MoMA Design Store locations.
