Seattle has given its residents a warning: either compost or get fined.
The city passed a new ordinance allowing it to fine residents whose trash has a large amount of compostable waste. The decision will be made by the trash collectors who can make a judgement call on whether someone’s trash has more than 10 percent food scraps and other organic waste.
“Our growth rate for recycling has stalled,” said Councilmember Sally Bagshaw, who sponsored the bill. “It’s surprising, but we still send 300,000 tons of garbage every year to a landfill in eastern Oregon. I think we can do a lot better than that.”
