There are several issues at the forefront of America’s dialogue on health; as a country, we are no stranger to heart disease, cancer and obesity and the effects of these diseases are felt nationwide. However, there are certain states that fare more poorly when it comes to the overall health of their populations.

This year, the report issued by America’s Health Rankings and the United Health Foundation listed these five states as America’s most unhealthy.

Indiana

Topping the list as the country’s most unhealthy state, Indiana shows a high prevalence of obesity and the chronic health problems that accompany it. According to the report, the population of Indiana is less likely to do physical activities than those in many other states and must deal with severe air pollution in many areas.

South Carolina

This state was named the second most unhealthy in the U.S. due to its high prevalence of diabetes. A low birth weight among babies born in South Carolina is also common.
