It is an urban legend that no one really knows what goes into a hot dog, but a recent study found even the goriest of myths don’t compare to what’s actually in there: human DNA.

The ingredient was found by Clear Foods, which “uses genomic technology to analyze the world’s foods at a molecular level, ingredient by ingredient.” In an effort to see how accurate the labels were, the company examined 345 hot dog and sausage products from 75 brands and 10 retailers.

The results were disgusting for both the meat and non-meat eaters as they found “human DNA in 2% of the samples, and in 2/3rds of the vegetarian samples.”

In 10 percent of vegetarian samples, they also found meat but Clear Foods added that despite these unwanted add-ons in some of the samples, “there are a number of hot dog manufacturers, large and small, that are producing high-quality hot dogs with integrity.”

Some of those better brands included Butterball (since animal cruelty is not being factored in), McCormick, Eckrich and Hebrew National. Gardein scored the highest in the specialty and regional categories.

Is it safe to say we’re all going with some asparagus on the grill instead next time there’s a barbecue?
