By day he is paid millions to save Middle Earth in Lord of the Rings, but in his spare time actor Orlando Bloom picks much gentler fights.
While Sonia Copeland Bloom’s son has been gallivanting around the rolling hills of New Zealand,  his mum has written a book about the plight of the butterfly, which Orlando has kindly sponsored.
Crystal, the Small Miracle is a children’s book about butterflies. Not quite fiction and not quite fact, Sonia says it’s part of an exciting new genre “taking everyone by surprise” called faction!
The book mixes fact and fiction to chart the life story of the insect from tiny egg to fully formed butterfly.
Orlando, 34, told Associated France Presse that he is down with the butterflies, praising them as “powerful symbols of the beauty and the vulnerability of nature”. Just like actors, really.
But seriously, butterflies and moths are declining rapidly in the UK and around the world, and we’re delighted that Bloom’s celebrity backing will help make people more aware of their plight.
Not for him the adoption of a coterie of disadvantaged children, or fatuous peace missions to Afghanistan (yes, Pitt, Jolie and Law, we are talking about you).
Just don’t come crying to us, Blooms, when Waterstone’s refuses to start its own ‘faction’ section just for you.
