I’m taking a brief hiatus from the denim review I usually post here on Friday, to talk about a sometimes neglected component of the Eat, Sleep, Denim lifestyle – and that is the denim (or chambray) shirt. More than most, I see the adventure and variety in wearing jeans almost everyday, but a girl’s gotta change it up sometimes.

Enter: the denim shirt. button down shirts made of soft denim or chambray have made a huge resurgence in the last year or so, and it’s kind of a wonder we took so long to come back around to them. The same way men wear blue dress shirts all the time, with everything, a denim or chambray shirt functions the same way in a woman’s wardrobe. They go with everything and are insanely versatile.

Crissie is rocking one of my favorite ways to wear a chambray shirt (obviously) which is with your dark jeans – especially flares. The contrast in washes keeps you from looking too monotone, and a stand-out belt adds a fun twist. You can find a chambray shirt in any wash imaginable from brands like Madewell and J. Crew.

My go-to denim shirt has a western feel, with it’s pearl snap buttons and patch pockets. It’s a steal from Levi’s at about $58, and has a fitted, feminine cut. I love wearing it with this black maxi skirt, but check out a couple other styling ideas here (and all sorts of ideas via The Huffington Post here).

Whether you want a shirt that’s softer and slouchier or a sturdier one with a tailored fit, a shirt cut from our favorite cloth will live in your closet forever. Layer it under your favorite sweater or over your favorite spring dress – it’s a piece that can do just about anything.

Here are a few of my favorites right now:

How do you wear a denim shirt? Do you prefer a softer chambray?
