This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be invited out to spend the weekend in Amangansett on Long Island. “The Hamptons,” or the collection of villages that run along the Atlantic coast of the island all the way up to Montauk make up some of the most beautiful scenery within striking distance of New York City.

Where I was staying, at a house in between Montauk and Amagansett, the attitude is decidedly different than what the typical impression of The Hamptons might be. The beaches are spotted with surfers, the lifestyle and way of dress is casual and beach-y – far from the preppy, high-end style of East Hampton and Southampton.

For an afternoon at a beach bar and a sunset stroll on White Sands Beach, these J Brand cutoff shorts (c/o) were the perfect denim piece. They also seem to get better and better with each wear, as the frayed edges become more ragged and the fabric softens up. I’m pretty sure I wore them the whole weekend, but on Saturday I paired them with a crochet sleeveless top and neon sandals from Dolce Vita.
