Beginning on March 9th, the New York Restoration Project – a nonprofit organization founded by actress and environmentalist Bette Midler – will kick off their annual spring tree giveaways. Thanks to a sponsorship by Toyota, 4,500 trees will be free for the taking in a series of 30 giveaways throughout all five boroughs. Read on to see how you can score your own free tree!

By registering in advance, New York property owners can pick up a free tree to plant on their personal property. These giveaways will allow people to support the MillionTreesNYC initiative to plant one million new trees by 2017.

There are a few restrictions that receivers will need to agree to prior to taking home their beloved new seedling: The tree must be planted in one of the five boroughs on personal property and not within a city park, community garden, container, or on a balcony or roof. Additionally, new tree owners must agree to maintain and water their tree.

To register for a tree in your borough, visit the New York Restoration Project’s website for giveaway dates and to reserve your space. Onsite representatives will be available to assist you with instructions on how to plant and care for your tree.
