A new web series that shows how to turn your small urban space into a modern homestead will launch in October.

If you’ve ever wanted to raise chickens in your own backyard, or place beehives on your condo’s roof, then “The Urban Homesteader” is for you.

The project was launched by the help of an Indiegogo campaign, and in addition to helpful episodes about constructing chicken coops, the “Urban Homesteader” team plans to roll out a site full of how-to guides and forums connecting readers with skill-sharing workshops across the country, as well as pickling aficionados — which lends well to the project’s promise that “Once you get a taste of your own pickles, it will be hard to turn back!”

The series will focus on Oakland, California, which is one of the biggest homesteading cities in the country, thanks to City Slickers Farm and the Institute of Urban Homesteading. The institute offers courses on fermentation, animal husbandry, and more.

But if you can’t afford classes, or don’t live in Oakland, this is where the web series comes in handy.

Harvind Singh, one of the show’s partners and a “local forager” for Whole Foods, will co-host the series. The second co-host has yet to be cast (the woman in the promo clip is a hired actress).

The series might look like it’s a spoof of “Portlandia”, but we’re sure that people who dream of growing their own cucumbers will appreciate this new project.
