We all have a perfect fitting pair of jeans that flatter our figures and makes us feel confident, but finding the right style of jeans for your body shape can be difficult. When shopping for jeans, the three questions you should be asking yourself are:

Do I feel comfortable in these jeans? (Can you sit down, stand up, and move freely without feeling restricted?)

Do I feel confident in these jeans? (Do the jeans flatter any problem areas you may have or do they accentuate them?)

Do these jeans look stylish on me? (Are you buying a certain type of jeans because your friend, with a different body shape to you, is wearing them? Do these jeans go with anything you own at home?)

We have taken four of the most common body shapes and given you suggestions on what style of jeans will suit you best! Don’t know how to recognise your body shape? Check out this body shape guide to determine whether you are a pear, apple, hourglass or athletic body shape.

Pear

The characteristics of a pear body shape tends to be a large behind and thighs in contrast with a small bust and defined waist. Although this is generally one of the easiest body shapes to shop for, it can be difficult to find a pair of jeans that fit at the waist, the hips and the thighs. As most women who are pear shapes want to shift the attention away from their lower body, we recommend that you search for darker coloured jeans with large pockets and little detail which will create the illusion that you have a smaller behind. Wearing bold-patterns on your upper half can also have this effect. High-rise jeans are also extremely flattering for pear shapes as they will cover any problems you may have with your stomach and make your legs look longer.

Apple

Generally, women who have an apple body shape have no waist or hip definition but they do have killer legs! Due to this, if you are an apple shape you should be looking for dark wash midrise jeans that prevent “muffin top” and flatter your figure rather than high rise jeans that will try to suck you in and make you feel uncomfortable. Midrise jeans are ideal for lengthening the look of your waist, and crop jeans will draw attention to your slender legs.

Hourglass

Hourglass women have the figure envied by most, generally having a full bust and hips with a defined waist. Women with an hourglass figure should generally avoid tight fitting garments on their lower half to draw attention to their middle. Consider purchasing jeans with features such as wide legs that balance out your hips and skinny calves, smaller cuts at the waist than hips reducing “gap waist” significantly and lengthy inseams. Avoid skinny jeans if you are an hourglass shape, and try tapered or boot cut jeans to even out your proportions and cater for your larger thighs and slim ankles.

Athletic

It is a common misconception that women with an athletic or “rectangle” body shape do not have curves, which is not the case. Women with an athletic body shape are generally very equally proportioned but would like to accentuate their assets by finding the perfect garments to create a more defined figure. To make the most of your equal proportions, you should look for jeans that emphasize your long slender legs while creating the illusion of a waist. High waisted skinny jeans smooth over your figure and the high-waisted fit will create the illusion of a waist. Pair with a crop top or an oversized t-shirt.
