One of the richest men in the world is investing a lot of money in renewable energy but not divesting from fossil fuels.

In an interview with The Financial Times, Bill Gates said that he will be investing $2bn into renewable energies, doubling his current investment, in the next five years. The intent is to “bend the curve” on climate change.

Ironically, however, Gates also said he will not be divesting from energy companies that use fossil fuels and are greatly contributing to the problem of climate change.

Last March, The Guardian launched a campaign signed by over 200,000 people urging The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to divest the $1.4bn it currently has invested in fossil fuel companies like BP. The campaign was dismissed by Gates who said he didn’t see that having a big impact.

Instead the billionaire is then investing in new technology because, as he put it, the current renewable options come at “a beyond astronomical cost” and innovation will be the only way to find a positive solution.

Gates has expressed his support for renewable energy and fighting climate change in the past. In a TEDx talk in 2010, he called for “energy miracles” to solve the issue of climate change and he has urged people to give up meat since its production is one of the biggest contributors to the problem.
