A major new report from the European Commission has this week warned that member states are not doing enough to tackle dwindling fish stocks and improve the health of the oceans.
The report, which is to be presented at the “Healthy Oceans – Productive Ecosystems” (HOPE) conference in Brussels next month, concludes that “urgent efforts” are required if the marine ecosystem is to restored to a “good status” by 2020.
“The message is clear,” said Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik. “Europe’s seas and oceans are not in good shape. But we depend on these seas, and we need to find a balance. That means finding ways to reap their economic potential without increasing the pressure on an already fragile environment, creating growth and jobs that are secure in the long term.”
