The film explores the lives of the majestic mammals — all 55-foot, 50-ton of them — and how the once endangered species are now in the midst of a slow comeback. Earlier this year the Canadian government downgraded the humpback whale to a “species of concern,” which, for a species that once considered almost extinct, is better than nothing.

“We hope the film excites and inspires people to better understand the humpback whale, as this mammal is critical to the ecological health and survival of the ocean,” MacGillivray said.

McGregor is not a stranger to narrating eco-friendly documentaries. Last year, he lent his pipes to a nature series featuring his native country, “Wild Scotland.”
