To protest Shell’s plans to drill in the Arctic, Greenpeace just unveiled Aurora – the world’s largest polar bear puppet! The incredible creation stands 16 feet tall and 41 feet long, making it about the size of a double-decker bus. Made from recycled materials and reclaimed ship parts, the animal can move its limbs, head, neck, and jaws, and it will be set to lumber its way through London on September 15.

The three-ton marionette was created by Christopher Kelly and will be operated by a team of over 15 puppeteers from the inside. 30 volunteers will help to haul the bear through London on a route that will wind past the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Bridge before reaching its final destination at Shell’s headquarters on the South Bank.

Aurora will carry the names of over three and a half million concerned citizens in her fur while also playing the sound of cracking ice from an internal sound system. The names will be delivered during a parade set for September 15, a date that coincides with the maximum amount of recorded ice melt in the Arctic. The journey will begin at Victoria Tower Gardens at noon.

Greenpeace is offering two participants the opportunity to ride on the bear’s shoulders during the event, and entries can be made through their official website.
