Foldable bikes are a popular trend, but what about folding helmets? Morpher is a brand new portable helmet that is designed to fit into a bag to encourage cyclists to take their safety more seriously. The flat-folding helmet is the brainchild of Jeff Woolf (OBE, twice voted British Inventor of the Year, and an avid urban cyclist) who wanted to help make sure that this biking essential can be easily incorporated into a cyclist’s life.

The London-based inventor hopes that by transforming the traditional cumbersome helmet into a simpler, lightweight design, cycling casualties could be reduced. This is a serious issue, as US studies show that more than 90% of cycling fatalities happen to riders not wearing the all-important helmet. Moreover, according to a recent article in Al Jazeera, a 2012 study found that 80% of people using bike-shares in Boston and Washington DC do not wear a helmet.

A primary concern during the design process was to make sure Morpher was a safe alternative. Woolf says the helmet has been designed to exceed all relevant safety standards. It has already received wide recognition and won three awards.
