Maskull Lasserre’s extraordinary sculptures are a far cry from traditional woodwork we see today. Exploring the intricate details of the human body hidden beneath the skin, Lasserre recreates anatomical forms, bringing them to the surface of everyday life.
Lasserre incorporates these somewhat macabre details into pieces of furniture and other useful objects, transforming them into a sculptural shapes. As stated on his website, the Canadian sculpter creates “works that induce strangeness in the familiar, and provoke uncertainty in the expected”. His sculptures also take on a dark side. By carving a skull into the corner of a table, he ensures the cranium cannot be ignored. And by shaping a frame corner into a realistic set of wooden teeth, he forces these somber details to be acknowledged.


Lasserre’s work proves that wood remains an amazing material to work with. He doesn’t stop at wood though, he also creates incredible multi-media works using textiles and steel.
Currently being exhibited at the Pierre-François Ouellette (PFOAC) in Montreal where he’s based, you can go and take a look until August 7th, or wait for its return in November.
