Irish actor, film producer and environmentalist Pierce Brosnan is speaking out in defense of whales after learning of the U.S. Navy’s plan to use sonar testing in its five-year training program, threatening the lives of thousands of whales and other marine mammals.

Brosnan teamed up with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to help promote its “Save Whales Now” campaign, which aims to spread awareness on the dangers of high-powered sonar testing while also encouraging the military to adopt more humane training methods. In a video for NRDC, Brosnan educates viewers on the damaging effects of sonar testing, explaining that it bombards whales with intense noise that often causes total hearing loss. Whales depend on their hearing for survival; without it, they cannot find food, migrate, or communicate with one another. As Brosnan states in the video, “In the darkened sea, a deaf whale is a dead whale.”
