Six live hawks hidden in a compartment in the front end of a car were seized by police in the southeastern province of Gaziantep, Doğan News Agency, or DHA, reported Friday.
The police stopped a car with two people in it in Gaziantep upon suspicion.
They found the six hawks, with their beaks and talons wrapped in cloth to prevent injury, a hidden compartment near the car’s engine block.
The report said the suspects were trying to smuggle the hawks out of Turkey. The two suspects had illegally captured the birds in Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep provinces and were fined 6,500 liras per bird for violating hunting laws.
The hawks were delivered to the Provincial Directorate of Environment and Forestry.
