The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society might be busy protecting dolphins in the Faroe Islands and whales in Japan, but it has found time to partner with another organization in Costa Rica to protect its sea turtles.

LAST, Latin American Sea Turtles Association, asked for Sea Shepherd’s help in protecting green, hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles’ nests at Pacuare Island. September is estimated to be the animals’ peak season for nesting and that makes them a target for poachers.

“Poaching and other human activities are wiping out sea turtles at alarming rates. Many species are close to permanently vanishing from the oceans,” warned Sea Shepherd USA Executive Director Susan Hartland. “The time to protect them is now, and Sea Shepherd is committed to doing just that in Costa Rica and other nesting habitats around the world.”
