This is not good news. According to a new report from the American Lung Association, more than 40 percent of Americans live in a city with poor air quality.
Not surprisingly, California and its infamous smog makes more than one appearance on the list. For all of its beauty, Los Angeles has some of the most polluted air in the country. The City of Angels experiences unhealthy levels of particle pollution — which is the toxins emitted by smoking or driving a car — for the equivalent of nearly a month out of each year. Not to mention it also has an unhealthy ozone pollution — a.k.a. smog — for the equivalent of more than two months annually.
All of this pollution can worsen breathing problems, like asthma, and increase residents’ risk of developing cancer.
The report also notes that discrepancies for those at risk exist even within the cities themselves. For example, people who live close to highways or busy roads, and those who live at a low socioeconomic status in general, have higher exposure to poorer air quality.
The report follows one released by the European Environment Agency (EEA) last month that forecasts hundreds of thousands of people in the E.U. will suffer and die from toxicity in the air in the coming two decades.
Without much further adieu, here are the U.S. cities with the most ozone pollution in 2015:
1. Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA
2. Visalia-Porterville-Hanford, CA
3. Bakersfield, CA
4. Fresno-Madera, CA
5. Sacramento-Roseville, CA
6. Houston-The Woodlands, TX
7. Dallas-Fort Worth, TX-OK
8. Modesto-Merced, CA
9. Las Vegas-Henderson, NV-AZ
10. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ
