When Schildi the turtle was found by animal rescuers, he wasn’t in great shape. Veterinarians found that he had a badly infected leg, which had to be amputated. But to make sure Schildi could regain mobility, some creative doctors at the Bird Consulting Practice in Baden, Germany, created a special prosthetic for him made from Legos.

Dr. Panagiotis Azmanis came up with the idea and found the pieces after raiding a co-worker’s daughter’s toy box. Fitted to the turtle’s body with glue, the doctors tweaked with the popular building blocks to find the right height, and also determined that a single wheel worked better than two wheels, especially for navigating turns. Schildi is recovering at an animal rescue center and is adapting nicely to his new wheel.

“We will see him again once in a while for check-ups,” said Azmanis. “If he gets a ‘flat tire’ it will be a simple matter to replace the wheel. They move around quite a lot so I’d expect to see him for a new wheel about once a year.”
