UP Projects just unveiled their new Floating Cinema – a mobile venue for cinephiles and movie-related events in London. Designed by Duggan Morris Architects, the floating cinema will host a series of open-air film screenings as part of the new “Extra-Ordinary” program, which seeks to animate the waterways of East London.

With its quirky name and vibrant colors, the Floating Cinema will host a variety of onboard screenings, large-scale outdoor films for bankside audiences, floating tours of the waterways, and educational projects created with local communities. The project is part of the “Extra-Ordinary” program of events developed in collaboration between UP Projects and film-maker artist duo Somewhere (Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie). The cinema’s onboard performances and tours will also be streamed live at the project’s website.
Duggan Morris Architects’ proposal was selected from a shortlist of four international practices. The barge has a unique “hybrid” engine system that powers the A/V kit which will run on biofuel.
