Here’s a record category for solar power I hadn’t seen: The highest solar power plant in the world. The honor goes to Suntech and their newly announced 10 MW project in Tibet, located in the village of Chek Kang in Lhoka (Shannan) Prefecture.

Sitting at 4,000 meters (13,100’) above sea level Expected to be completed by the middle of this year, the project is estimated to produce some 20,000 MWh of electricity.

Touting the potential of solar power in Tibet, Suntech’s CEO said in a press release,

With intense sunlight and cool temperatures, Tibet is extremely well-suited for the utilization of advanced photovoltaic technology. We’re proud to invest in preserving the region’s fragile ecosystem by providing an economically-viable and sustainable solution for electricity generation.
