Studio Toer turned visitors to the Into The Great Wide Open music festival into literal treehuggers with their Boom Boom soundscape installation last year. Located in a wooded landscape on the Dutch island of Vlieland, Boom Boom—which means ‘tree tree’ in Dutch—made sounds when visitors activated a set of motion and touch sensors rigged up to trees. The sounds and vibrations changed when the trees were approached, touched, or hugged, introducing a new and extraordinary way of interacting with nature.
