Because of the recession, stalled construction sites are a problem all across the nation. New York City alone has more than 600 projects awaiting more financing before construction can continue. One such project is the second phase of the Alexandria Center for Life Science, a complex on Manhattan’s 29th Street near the East River. But instead of letting the stalled site become a derelict eyesore, the developers transformed the space into a 15,000 square foot urban farm that has been growing food for Riverpark, the on-site restaurant, since the beginning of the summer. Not only does this ingenious use of space make the construction site easier on the eyes, but it increases our access to fresh, local food. Hit the jump to see the innovative farm for yourself!
