Big changes are underway in Copenhagen, particularly at Nordhavn, an active industrial harbor currently being redeveloped into a modern mixed-use waterfront district. As part of the urban revitalization project, Danish firm COBE will transform the area’s tallest historic grain silo into housing and exhibition space in a project called “The Silo.” The renovated silo is slated to become a landmark building in the new urban development, the plans of which were also designed by COBE.

Topping out at a little over 200 feet, the 17-story tall silo is the largest industrial building in Nordhavn as well as one of its most well-known and iconic landmarks. The architects hope to maintain the identity of the silo while reinterpreting it in a modern setting. The final design will result in 40 stacked apartments with varying ceiling heights and sizes, each partly dictated by the silo’s existing spatial variation brought about by demands for the storage and handling of grain. Each apartment will be outfitted with large panoramic windows and balconies that overlook the Copenhagen skyline and Oresund.
