Whether they are the tallest organism in the world, or the oldest, or show up in our buildings, trees are wonderful and yet sometimes under-appreciated. Rather than processing the material into a new, unrecognizable form, New York City-based Chilean designer Sebastian Errazuriz decides to emphasize the original form of fallen tree branches in this set of striking furniture.

Even though these salvaged tree limbs look quite au naturel, Errazuriz achieves a polished, elegant look by sanding everything down and coating them with a black, matte lacquered finish. He then strategically places glass shelving panels to allow for display of books and other knick-knacks, giving the impression of objects floating along with these modified branches.

He explains the concept as getting people to look beyond the mundane:

It’s important to me that a project consist of just a little twist, because I ultimately want people to see the obvious, the everyday differently.

Errazuriz has implemented the approach with these wonderful coffee tables, which consist of reclaimed wood and a simple, glass surface. Thanks to the preservation of their original shape, these tree limbs bring a forest atmosphere right into the living room.

Trees have their own inherent beauty, grace and strength, and Errazuriz’s collection of understated but refined furniture are real reminders of these wonderful qualities, but remade for a minimalist home. See more over at Sebastian Errazuriz.
