If you have 10 minutes and would like an introduction to the very worrisome problem of ocean acidification, please watch this short film from Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML): “Ocean acidification: Connecting science, industry, policy and public.” The film was launched today at the International Ocean Acidification Reference User Group meeting in Brussels.
Ocean acidification is being caused by increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Earth’s atmosphere. The ocean is absorbing much of the CO2, acidifying the water in ways that threaten fragile ecosystems. If nothing is done, there will be dire circumstances. Consider this as you digest this prediction out today from the UN that the world is set to consume three times more natural resources than current rates by the middle of the century.
The takeaway from the film is that all stakeholders—from Prince Albert II of Monaco, to children, to a fishmonger, to a UK government Chief Scientific Adviser, to policymakers—all have a role to play in finding a solution. The film makes it plain that each stakeholder has its own parochial interests, and that finding common ground is difficult but necessary.
