Renli Su may very well be one of the first Chinese designers (if not the first) on the international arena who is clearly committed to sustainable fashion. The Renli Su installation or tableau at Fashion Scout would probably be relevant as an image of peasant china, or a musing of a Pre-Raphaelite or John Millais painting. Pastoral completely. I think it’s about time we have a pastoral comeback on the fashion front; the last really huge one must have been at the time of the ‘Laura Ashley’ era. Renli Su’s inspiration for the collection, however, is derived from the textures of Brazilian artist Mira Schendal.
Having just recently arrived in Shanghai, there was not only the excitement of finding a kind of némesis of my style in the discovery of Chinese designers, but also the excitement in finding destination boutiques with ethical designers hand-picked on style rather than creed. So, I suppose I should not have been so surprised when I came across Renli Su collection at Dong Liang studio (one of my favorite destination boutiques in the hunt for Chinese design).
Back in February when I met Renli Su at Fashion Scout at London Fashion Week, she was only selling in China with her debut collection exclusively held at Dong Liang but it hadn’t sunk in, there was a lot of buzz around her in London and she was going on to Paris. I never thought of Dong Liang or her in Shanghai!
