If there’s anything that might scare you away from consuming sugar for good, it’s probably watching the new doc, “That Sugar Film.”
“That Sugar Film” was written and directed by Damon Gameau, who gave up sugar three years ago. According to the film’s synopsis, he “embarks on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, consuming only foods that are commonly perceived as ‘healthy’…Damon highlights some of the issues that plague the sugar industry, and where sugar lurks on supermarket shelves.”
Unsurprisingly, the film is being compared to Morgan Spurlock‘s “Super Size Me” and his journey with fast food.
The doc, which was described as a “must-see” from Jamie Oliver, features interviews with experts on sugar, as well as appearances by Hugh Jackman, Stephen Fry and Isabel Lucas.
The timing of the film couldn’t be better. Earlier this year, the new U.S. dietary guidelines advised that Americans should be consuming more plant-based foods and less sugar. Sugar is known to contribute to high blood pressure, obesity, and potentially cardiovascular disease.
Oh, and it’s also eight times more addicting than cocaine, according to a study that was published earlier this year. The study showed that “added sugar consumed at concentrations currently considered safe exerts dramatic impacts on mammalian health.”
