My design choices were determined by the need for a uniform that would be comfortable, durable, easy to produce, and still aesthetically pleasing.
Both boys’ and girls’ uniforms share many elements: The sleeves are raglan style, comfortable and easy to set in; easily replaceable and adjustable drawstrings fasten waists. The shapes of necklines and hems give light reference to traditional clothing; the contrast color trim economically utilizes the equally soft wrong side of the fabric.
The girls’ uniforms are one simple pull-on piece, high waisted, with somewhat full and fluttering sleeves and applied pockets. The topstitching could be entirely decorative or indicate another set of pockets in the side seams according to students’ needs. Its cut allows the sizing to be quite flexible.
The boys’ uniforms consist of a pull-on shirt with chest pocket with drawstring pull-on shorts with applied pockets. As with the girls’ uniforms, the shirt and short pants are cut from nearly rectangular pieces, creating flexible fit and efficient cutting layouts.
These uniforms are designed to be practical, comfortable garments, but also to be aesthetically pleasing, something the students can be happy and proud to wear.
