Many children across the world wear uniforms to school each day. Some of these children including those in Sierra Leone, must have uniforms that can stand up to their changing climates and lifestyle. When designing the uniforms for this Orta Blu challenge we researched the lives and living conditions of the children in Sierra Leone. Through all of that research we found that the most important features that we should include in these uniforms are both a compactable raincoat for the rainy season and the ability to pass on and share the uniforms with others. This collection includes a uniform shirt, rain jacket, skort, and a pair of shorts. We decided to use the same design for both the boys and girls shirt, because this enables families to pass on the uniforms to their other children and or share with neighbors or friends. This is also a benefit to the mothers, because they do not have to constantly wash the uniforms since the children are now able to wear their siblings. Although the shirt will be the same, the use of a skort and shorts keep the looks gender appropriate. Snaps are the closure of choice for these uniforms, since velcro and zippers do not last long in the dust and buttons often fall off. We feel that we have created a wearable uniform that will satisfy not only the school and parents needs, but also a uniform that will satisfy the children’s desires.
