For my project I focused on three main things; the culture and climate of the area of these schools, the efficiency of the production of the garment, and keeping them fun and fashionable for the students. I felt it was important to design with the child in mind and not just from the perspective of what will be easy to make, or care for, or will meet all religious standards. I have come up with solutions that successfully blend practicality with childish whimsy. For the girls I my focus was girl power; I wanted designs that would allow them to run and dance as much as the boys and yet not sacrifice fashion for function. I have included a classic and elegant wrap dress, a fun romper that has gathered shorts that appear to look just like a skirt but will allow the girls to run and dance without being exposed, also on this design I have included a tank top with a ruffle overlay, again to give some breathability as well as covering the girls. Lastly for the girls I have a dress- Capri combo that is fun and youthful. For the boys I focused on the exploration. Boys love to collect so I equipped them with lots of pockets to collect. One design actually has a built in cargo backpack, while the other has a flap with reflective tape that can be buttoned up or down to reveal the tape. The designs also include pencil holding strips and button up sleeves for when it’s time to get their hands dirty. I feel my designs are not only practical and meet all the criteria but they also will promote confidence and wonder in the children.
