The sustainable clothing label, which is also the largest consumer of organic cotton in the United States, has launched “Shirt Scan,” a free iPhone app that unlocks your shirt’s history—along with a cornucopia of multimedia goodies—through a Quick Response (QR) code on the label or hangtag.

Shirt Scan was inspired by one of Anvil’s earlier projects: TrackMyT, an interactive website that chronicles the seed-to-store life cycle of a T-shirt. By scanning any Shirt Scan QR code with your iPhone, you’ll gain access to digital content, including videos, about your garment and the people who created it.

Through Shirt Scan, we’re enhancing the way consumers interact with their products and services, creating a digital platform for apparel and thus improving their experience with the clothing they wear,” says Anthony Corsano, the company’s president and CEO.

In this age of constantly discarded clothing, we love the idea of getting a story with your duds. Not only is it a brilliant marketing tool but it’s also a great way for us to dig deep into the roots of what we consume.
