Italy intends to build three new facilities for turning waste into fuel in the south of the country, extending its leading role in the burgeoning European biofuels sector.

A statement released by the Ministry of Economic Development late last week said it had signed an agreement with Biochemtex of the Mossi Ghisolfi Group that could result in the development of bioethanol production sites in Sulcis, Termini Imerese, and Puglia.

The three sites are still at an early stage and further investigations will now be made into their viability.

However, should the projects go forward, they will add to Beta Renewables’ advanced biofuels site in Crescentino, currently the only commercial scale advanced biofuels plant in Europe.
