Kengo Kuma’s Casa Umbrella is a lightweight, quick to assemble, and waterproof pop-up shelter made from zipped together umbrellas! Kuma designed the temporary structure for the Triennale Di Milano, and its name is a play on words – casa” means “house” in Italian and also “umbrella” in Japanese.

Presented as part of the 2008′s Casa Per Tutti (House for All) exhibition, Casa Umbrella can be used as a pop-up shelter, temporary house, or emergency room. Its 160 square feet were created from 15 umbrella bones zipped together and wrapped in a shiny translucent skin made from waterproof Tyvek. Connected triangular modules are joined together with water-cut fasteners (commonly used for diving suits) to form the bubble-like shape that can also be adjusted to expand or contract as desired. And because it’s constructed from standard objects easily found in a market, the faceted shelter is easily replicable.

On a rainy day, Casa Umbrella becomes a rain shelter, and on a sunny day it can be a breezy pop-up home filled with natural light.
