Fashion should be fun, but it should also make you think. Lucio Castro’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection, which debuted at Manhattan’s Industria Studios at New York Fashion Week on Friday, does a little bit of both. Certainly the Argentine designer didn’t shy away from drawing literal parallels. Inspired by a friend’s depiction of growing up in 1970s Eastern Europe, Castro repurposed vintage terry beach towels from Croatia, Latvia, and Belarus to explore the dissonance of vacationing in the shadow of the Soviet Union. “We liked the contrast between the sense of freedom and fun that a beach vacation carries, versus the severe regime behind the Iron Curtain,” Castro told Ecouterre afterwards.
