Melbourne designers March Studio suspended over 2,000 ‘flying’ pieces of reclaimed wood to create a dynamic centerpiece for the green star-rated mixed use Nishi building in downtown Canberra. Walking down the stairs is like entering a frozen explosion of wooden beams, as if a small village of huts has been blown to smithereens before your eyes. No two wooden fragments match. Some are polished, some rough textured, others feature remnants of colored paint, but all the markings hint at their former lives within a house, a basketball court or as offcuts from the Blackbutt or Eucalyptus pilularis facade.
