Every child deserves a future…
Uniformed Lines is a small collection of uniforms designed for students in Sierra Leone. Early in the creative process, I decided the uniforms had to serve a dual purpose. First purpose of the collection is to provide stylish and functional school uniforms for the children. The second purpose is to teach the Women Association in Lebanon simple fabric manipulations that can be applied to garments, home goods and quilts. As I began my research, I was drawn to the clean lines and geometry of contemporary architecture. I feel the crisp lines of the building by the buildings are a perfect match for a school uniforms. Through exploration, I was able to create a series of fabric manipulations that were aesthetically pleasing and simple to reproduce. Topstitching is used to secure openings that could capture dust. Color variation is achieved by contrasting the light and dark sides of the denim. Due to the environment of the region, I opted for button closures. A flap of reinforced denim provides extra protection for the buttons. The girl’s uniforms have the ability to be lengthen with an extended hem. Reinforced stitching is used on the boys and girls uniforms to provide strength to the garments. It is my hope that Uniformed Lines provides the students with durable and fun outfits that can be wore during their pursuit of knowledge.
