That’s right, I went there. For you. I haven’t put on a pair of overalls since the 5th grade, but here I am at the age of 26, revisiting this very ’90s moment.

I was both intrigued and mystified when we started to see denim overalls cropping up around town and in stores again. I wasn’t (and still am not) sure if enough time has passed since the last time we did this. However, the same could be said for neon, peplums, crop-tops and floral, high-waisted jeans – yet here we are. And so, I decided to take these Joe’s Jeans short overalls for a spin around Soho.

First of all, these are not your 90′s overalls. Joe’s nixed the carpenter pockets on the leg, streamlined the fit and made them short, short, short. These are sized small, medium and large, so I went with the medium. They sit nicely on my hips, with no sagging. I can’t decide if I like that because they look more grown up, or wish they sagged to feel more relaxed. The denim is incredibly soft, and there’s no denying how comfortable they are. (They’re also 100% cotton, so they won’t stretch the same way as your jeans.)

Here’s the thing: I really struggled to feel like a grown-up in these. Dainty ballet flats and a strong blazer still only barely helped me feel appropriate as I rode the subway to work. I wondered if wearing them with heels would make me feel more pulled together, but decided they were a tad too short for that. Wearing something semi-fitted under the overalls is essential, to avoid looking like a balloon, so I went with a casual tee. Do I look like an urban farmer? Maybe. Do I kind of like it…

What do you think?

Tell me dear readers: Can I pull off these denim shortalls? Should anyone want to?
