My dad once told me, when I first started dating in high school and I would fret for hours over what to wear, that he thought my mom never looked better than when she wore jeans and a white button down shirt. For some reason that’s something I’ve never forgotten.

As a blog that aims to explore just how creative and versatile denim can be, ESD tries to illustrate how you can wear your jeans with more than just a white shirt. Today though, I’d like to salute this most classic combination. Ever since jeans came into fashion for women, there’s been few pairings more universally flattering than this one. From Jane Birkin to Marilyn Monroe and modern style icons like Gweneth Paltrow, they all knew the beauty of such a simple look.

Whether it’s a simple crew neck tee or a crisp button down, a silky blouse or cotton tank top, it’s a winning look. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing skinny jeans or trouser-cut, denim shorts or rolled and distressed boyfriend jeans, you can always count on a white top to look right. There’s something magical about the pairing of blue and white, don’t you think? The contrast is stark but casual; eternally appealing and sexy.
