How could I not kick off this series with James Dean? No male actor has ever looked sexier in jeans, period. It wasn’t just the jeans, of course. It was his smoldering swagger, his perfectly messy pompadour, his charming snarl.

“He dressed like an unmade bed,” one film critic said. Women (including, famously, Elizabeth Taylor) adored him, likely because he had both a hard side and a soft side: he took dance lessons from Eartha Kitt, and practiced bull fighting and racecar driving, the latter of which as we all know led to his untimely death.

On the set of Giant, Dean wore the same shirt for two weeks straight without washing it. He was extremely nearsighted and wore glasses, which added to his charm. He also made the tee-shirt and jeans look a trend that seemingly will last until the end of time.

Tragically, he made just three films. But fortunately photographers and cinematographers captured plenty of images of Mr. Dean. I mean how could they resist?
