For a long time, I viewed white denim as more of a theory than a fact. What I mean is, I always imagined that it was chic, and looked really crisp and summery in magazine editorials and on blogs, but in reality, I couldn’t make it work. Try as I might, there was always something: too-visible pockets, too tight in the thigh, too loose around the ankle, I couldn’t find my sweet spot. Not to mention, keeping them clean while adventuring around New York City seems next to impossible.

The Paige ‘Salt Flats’ wash of skinny, mostly-white jeans miraculously met a lot of the above criterion. Just the right amount of stretch? Check. A skinny-but-not-jegging-skinny ankle opening? Check. A length that works for flats and heels? Check!
The most interesting thing about these jeans is that they are not, in fact, pure white. As the name of the wash implies, they look as if they’ve been worn on a frolic through salty waves and sand, then hung out to dry in the sun. Streaks of dusty brown and patches of roughed up fabric give these skinnies a well-loved feel, and a look that is probably better suited for the beach than Chinatown.

Still, to make these jeans work both for city life and the fall season, I paired them with rich, almost jewel-tone pieces. A deep burgundy is one of my favorite cold-weather colors, and mustard is just about about the hottest hue out there right now. Using fabrics like suede, wool and tweed is another easy way to give your white denim a fall attitude.
