by taylordavies,

I don’t know what’s come over me really, but each time I’ve sat down to write my denim review over the past two weeks, I’ve been hit by a wave of nostalgia – triggered by pants.I know, it sounds weird to me too. Last week I was transported right back to the fifth grade, obsessing over wide leg carpenter jeans.

This week, I’m having vivid flashbacks to the same era – my days of a school uniform – and being thrilled that I was allowed to trade my usual khakis for navy or beige corduroy pants. That was until I tried them on. For reasons I can’t remember – maybe fit, maybe comfort – they just weren’t for me. I was crushed; scared; and have steared clear of them since.

Apparently though, I’m a bit of a push-over. When I saw this bright, almost blindingly bold tomato-red pair of skinny corduroys from Rag & Bone Jean, I was smitten. Suddenly, it was as if my traumatic adolescent try-on had never happened. I waited with baited breath for them to arrive.

Arrive they did. The color is stunning in person, that is for sure. The length is ideal, and the simple 5-pocket styling is exactly what you’d want in a corduroy that packs this much punch.  The fabric has a good amount of stretch, but isn’t super soft when you first put them on. In the photos it’s difficult to discern the ridging in the corduroy, because the lines are very thin, which I like. The visual effect is more like velour; letting the color speak more than the texture.

To style up these pants, I played off the memories of my uniform days, giving my ensemble kind of an ivy league vibe – if you catch my drift. I paired them with a vintage woven men’s belt and my navy Theory blazer, which makes the red really pop; and the leopard keeps the whole thing from being overly collegiate.

*Fit note: I typically wear a 27, but ordered a 28 to be on the safe side, since Rag & Bone notoriously runs small, but these were definitely not that. I would order true-to-size or a size down if you’re on the cusp.
