When I was in fifth grade, I was obsessed with Gap Kids. It was about as cool as it got in kid-fashion at the time, and they had this pair of wide leg, super-light wash carpenter jeans. A girl in my class got them before me, and wore them to school on Free Dress Friday (We wore uniforms all but one day a month). I wish you could have seen me, age 11, foaming at the mouth with jealousy. I begged my mom to take me to Gap to get my own pair that weekend. She obliged, and a lifetime of denim impulse shopping issues followed.


A couple of weeks ago I interviewed Christine about her denim wish list, and she mentioned a pair of Textile Elizabeth and James honey-colored carpenter jeans. “Carpenter jeans?!” I thought, “Girlfriend is crazy.” So clickity-click off I went to check out these jeans, and lo-and-behold, they’re cool. Like, really cool. Far from my baggy Gap Kids version of my youth, the Textile E & J Crosby Carpenter pant might be the most different pair of jeans I’ve worn in ages.


The rich honey-meets-mustard-meets-olive hue of these jeans functions like the ultimate neutral, and looks fantastic with just about any color or print you could throw at it. I opted for a bright, coral-ish red silk blouse for a major zing factor, further off-set by my jet black leather jacket.
The detailing on the Crosby is what really makes them stand out, and what pushes them just past the realm of what I might normally spend on a pair of pants. From the seaming above and below the knee to the hammer-loop to the ankle-zips, each design element is well placed and aesthetically on-point. They’re also crazy comfortable, with just the right amount of stretch. My only complaint might be that they’re a little more low-rise in the back than I would prefer.


If you’re in the market for an update, the Crosby is a great fall pant to splurge on. They’re perfect with all your little fall shoes now, and will look striking tucked into tall black riding boots when it gets cooler. I’m already envisioning them with every oversize sweater I own, for that perfect cozy-meets-cool coffee date look.
