I sometimes hear people disparaging the jean jacket as out-of-date and cheesy.  As with all prejudices I encourage those that give the side-eye to denim outerwear to open your minds!  Let the Spring/Summer 2012 collections serve as inspiration for a new look at this essential.
Although the designers above played with some non-denim fabrics to create these looks, it’s nonetheless interesting to imagine the options.  I’d personally love to see a waxed denim jacket in a light blue, inspired by this crisp take from Lyn Devon, or a dark blue denim cargo similar to this cut from Edun (second on the left).  And you can always turn to a boy’s closet for a take on the oversized look seen at Acne.
For now, though, I’ll be wearing my good old plain denim jacket – unfortunately we’re starting to need it as Fall rolls in here in NYC.  But if you’re willing to take a new look at this classic, here are four strong options, from simple twists to bold revisions:
