There’s something happening on the streets. Blame it on the economy, blame it on the government, or maybe just blame it on fashion designers: women are toughening up this season. Fabrics and styles once reserved for the military, for eccentrics and for motorcyle-riding babes – are on the shopping lists of even the most unadventurous of dressers.

The runways have been showing a “tough-chic” autumn woman for some time now, but it seems she’s finally jumped off her elevated perch and taken to the sidewalk.

So, what is this toughened-up woman wearing? Much like the woman above, she’s mixing textures like canvas and leather. She’s pairing her dark denim with studs, combat-inspired boots and menswear elements. She’s battening down the hatches and bracing herself against the elements – in style.

The key to pulling together a totally fierce, modern tough-girl look is not to lose sight of your femininity. Not entirely, at least. Try wearing this season’s leather jacket with spring’s floral blouses, or your olive green canvas jacket or parka over a maxi skirt and heels.
